The son of a carpenter, Walter Allward took a job in a brick factory making clay molds before enrolling in what is now called the Central Technical School in Toronto. At 19 he had his first commission, the figure of Peace on the Memorial of the Battles in the North West on the grounds of the Ontario legislature at Queen's Park. On the strength of this work, other commissions followed and in due course, Walter Allward became one of Canada's most sought after sculptors.
His most famous work is perhaps the massive stone monument at Vimy Ridge, France which commemorates Canada's war dead and bears the names of those who died with no known grave. Elsewhere, in Canada, you can find his work in Ottawa, at the Supreme Court of Canada, where his bronze sculptures of Truth (Veritas) and Justice (Justicia) flank the entrance to the courthouse.
